As of 1st July 2014 the ATO is transitioning to electronic lodgement, and moving away from paper.

For those documents affected by these new electronic lodgement rules (Including your Business Activity Statements) any lodgement via electronic channels will trigger a permanent change. As tax agents we of course lodge our clients BAS (as we do this electronically) either as a service we provide, an ad hoc request or as a result of “end of year” adjustments, meaning that at some stage a change is likely….then what?

BLOG: ATO ARE GOING PAPERLESS

Get Prepared Now.

We recommend embracing the changes now, and in doing so, take advantage of the benefits that come with having access to your very own ATO business portal, with it comes;

  • Ability to lodge most documents (including your BAS) online

  • 2 week extension on the lodgement deadline of all statements.

  • Allows direct communication with the ATO

  • View account balances and organise payment of ATO liabilities

  • Access history of all previously lodged statements/reports.

How?

The easiest way is by using the ”ATO business portal”. This portal is essentially a website, where you can login using a secure key (known as an AUSKey). Once in the portal you will be able to track your BAS lodgements and ensure your ATO Accounts are up to date.

To setup your AUSKey and Business Portal, there are 3 key steps.

Step 1. Register for an AUSKey , you will need to know

  • Your ABN and TFN

Step 2. Install your AUSKey.

  • After you register your Auskey, you will receive an email, with a link to “install software”. Click this link and follow the prompts.

Step 3. Log into the business portal

  • Once your Auskey is installed, you can access your account by going to https://bp.ato.gov.au/ (save this to your favourites)

  • There are a few main areas you will regularly use

    • Client Accounts – This will show your current amounts owing to the ATO

    • Activity Statement – Here you can lodge your outstanding BAS. You can also view previously lodged BAS

    • Payment Options – view and download payment options for the payment of your ATO debts

The ATO have indicated that there is more to come, with letters and other forms of communication tipped to move towards electronic medium.
